A well-built gravel driveway sheds water to the sides and stays firm through the seasons. When the crown flattens out or the surface develops low spots, water starts sitting on the road bed instead of draining off it. That is when washboarding starts, ruts develop, and gravel gets pushed to the edges where it does no good.

Why Driveways Need Regular Grading

Maine winters are hard on driveways. Frost heave pushes material around over the course of a season, and the spring thaw leaves surfaces soft and uneven. Traffic during mud season makes it worse. By the time the ground firms up in late spring, many driveways have developed ruts, low spots, and sections where the gravel has migrated to the edges or into the ditches.

Annual or biennial grading keeps a driveway in reasonable shape and extends the life of the gravel you have in it. Letting it go for several years usually means more gravel and more work when you finally address it.

 

What Grading Includes

When we grade a driveway, we redistribute the existing gravel to restore the crown and fill low spots, then blade the surface smooth. If the driveway has significant erosion damage or sections where gravel has been lost to washout, we can bring in additional material as part of the same job.

We also look at how water is draining off the sides. If ditches are filled in or culverts are not functioning, grading alone will not hold up. We can flag those issues so they get addressed before the next rain event undermines the work.

 

Best Time to Grade

Spring is the most common time for grading, once the frost is out of the ground and the surface has firmed up enough to work. Fall grading before the ground freezes is also worthwhile for driveways that took a hard season. We schedule jobs throughout the year based on ground conditions.
