Horse Fencing in Central Maine

Horse fencing has different requirements than a standard field or perimeter fence. Horses are heavy, curious, and can generate significant force against a fence when they lean, rub, or spook. The fence has to be visible enough that a moving horse sees it before making contact, and safe enough that contact does not cause cuts or entanglement.

Fencing Materials

The right fencing material depends on the number of horses, how the pasture will be used, and the terrain. Common options include:

• High-tensile wire with energized strands for large perimeter pastures
• Non-climb wire for areas where horses or other animals need a tighter barrier
• Board fencing for paddocks, barn lots, and high-visibility areas near structures
• Electric tape or rope as a temporary or subdivision option within a larger pasture

We will talk through the tradeoffs with you. Each material has different maintenance requirements and cost profiles over time, and what works well for a dry perimeter pasture may not be the right call for a wet or sloped area.

 

Terrain and Site Considerations

Maine land is rarely flat and often rocky. Ledge close to the surface can make post setting difficult or require different bracing strategies at corners and gates. Wet areas need attention to post depth and material selection to avoid early rot or heave. Slopes affect how fence lines run and where gates should be positioned for safe entry and exit.

We walk the fence line before quoting a job. If there are spots that will need extra work or where a different approach makes more sense, we will point those out before the project starts.

 

Gates and Access Points

Gates are where fences fail most often. Poorly hung hardware sags, latches become difficult to operate, and horses learn to work them open. We set gate posts in concrete with hardware rated for the gate width and weight. Drive-through gates for equipment access get the same attention as walk-through gates used daily.
