How Forestry Mulching Works

Forestry mulching uses a self-propelled machine with a rotating drum head fitted with carbide teeth. As the machine moves through vegetation, the drum cuts, chips, and grinds trees, brush, and stumps down to ground level in a single pass. The material does not get loaded into trucks or burned in piles. It stays on the ground as a mulch layer that decomposes over time.

This is one of the more efficient ways to clear wooded or overgrown land because it combines several steps into one operation. There is no separate phase for stump grinding, no slash piles to deal with, and no hauling costs. The machine does everything in the same pass it uses to clear.

 

What It Is Good For

Forestry mulching works best on properties with dense brush, saplings, and trees up to a certain diameter. It handles mixed vegetation well and does not require sorting or separate equipment for different material types. It is commonly used for:

• Clearing wooded lots ahead of construction
• Reclaiming fields and pastures overtaken by brush and young trees
• Creating or widening access roads through wooded land
• Maintaining power line corridors and right-of-ways
• Clearing fence lines before post installation
• Opening up views or sightlines from a home or structure

 

What Stays Behind

After mulching, the ground is covered with a layer of chipped material. On slopes, this reduces erosion on exposed soil. On flat ground, it breaks down into organic matter over a season or two. If you are preparing to seed or plant, the mulch layer can be tilled in or raked back depending on the intended use.

The mulch does not prevent you from grading or building. Contractors and excavators can work over it once your site work begins. For driveways and building pads, the mulch layer is typically incorporated into the subgrade or pushed aside during grading.
